Next Level 329: The Leadership Breakthrough with Warren Wandling

One of the highlights of Chris’s career was moving from individual producer to a director role, hiring, training, and mentoring sales teams. He also calls it one of the hardest shifts he ever made. In this episode, he sits down with leadership coach Warren Wandling to talk about why even highly capable leaders get stuck, and how they move from overwhelmed to clear, confident, and focused.
Warren starts with his own story. After surgery on his thyroid left one of his vocal cords paralyzed, he faced a real obstacle in a career built on speaking. He chose to fight through it, and that experience became the reason he launched his podcast. Then he and Chris work through the five laws Warren teaches leaders: knowing yourself, purpose, belief, focus, and goal setting. Chris shares how he used DISC to train his sales reps, how he coaches his son with one simple question (“What would a D1 lacrosse player do?”), and how time blocking shapes his own week.
Warren Wandling is a keynote speaker, leadership coach, and communication expert. He partners with leadership-driven companies and individuals to increase their productivity, clarify their purpose, and improve their communication skills, so they can strengthen employee engagement, lower stress and anxiety, and have time to do what matters most.
Drawing on more than 25 years of leadership development and coaching experience, Warren has trained and coached leaders in the public, private, and government sectors. He is the founder and host of the How to Become an Obstacle Buster podcast.
When Warren is not working, he enjoys spending time with his wife and daughters, serving in the community, and running across the Midwest. He has completed a marathon, showing the same grit and perseverance he trains leaders to develop.

What you’ll learn

  • How Warren rebuilt his voice after a paralyzed vocal cord, using a speech therapist, visualization, and daily exercises he still does today
  • The law of knowing yourself, and how the DISC assessment helps a leader see their own style and adjust it for the people they lead
  • The law of purpose, including the five myths Warren sees most often: that purpose is only for certain people, that it is your career, that it comes from a dramatic moment, that you need full clarity before you begin, and that it is mainly about personal fulfillment
  • Kevin McCarthy’s “light switch” test for whether you are living on purpose or off purpose
  • The law of belief: Warren’s chain from thoughts to beliefs to actions to results, and why he says most of the tens of thousands of thoughts we have each day are negative
  • Firewall for the Mind, Warren’s way of examining the inputs that shape your thinking and turning limiting beliefs into new, positive ones
  • The law of focus: the magnifying glass illustration, and why Warren now suggests time blocking one day a week and building from there
  • Why goal setting is the last of the five laws, and how it works when paired with a system
