Next Level 328: The Six-Figure Mistake: Life Insurance as Your Family Bank

When Chris and his wife found out they were expecting their first son in 2009, his first thought was how to provide for the family and pay for college. That led him to cash value life insurance. A few years later he asked his agent whether to fund a new investment from the bank or from his policy. The agent told him it didn’t matter. It did, and it cost him six figures in lost growth.
This episode is a special presentation Chris gave on the Money Insights Investment Insider webinar series. He lays out the full system he has built since then. Cash value policies are the foundation. A line of credit secured by that cash value is the hub that every dollar flows through. Income-producing investments feed the engine. Blake Brogan and Rod Zabriskie of Money Insights, the team that helps structure Chris’s policies, host the session and run the Q&A.

What you’ll learn

  • Why Chris calls idle money “the most expensive money you own”, and the options for cash waiting between investments
  • Why an engineer’s habit of writing down your assumptions applies to financial planning
  • How an average return and an actual return can be very different numbers
  • What a max-funded, dividend-paying whole life policy is, and why the industry rarely promotes it
  • How a policy loan lets your cash value keep compounding while the same dollars fund an investment
  • The Passive Income Operating System: salary, business, real estate, and investment income all flow into one line of credit, and expenses and investments flow out
  • The “savings tax”: how Chris’s family sets its savings on the front end so they never budget around it
  • Why Chris likes to keep a balance on his line of credit, and how he pays it down as investments pay out
  • Q&A with Money Insights: tracking interest for business use (a question for your CPA), when to add policies, flexible funding vs. a 10-pay design, 1035 exchanges, and whole life vs. IUL for this strategy
